I recently read the book ‘The Alchemist‘.  It’s actually been on my ‘to-read‘ list for quite a while, but I learned that the seniors are reading it at the high school I work at, so I thought now was as good a time as any.  I now know I was following the omens.  😉  It’s about a shepard who had a dream about finding a treasure by the pyramids in Egypt.  He meets several people who help him follow his heart to find his personal legend.  It is a really short, quick read, but is full helpful reminders for the journey I’m on.

I am trying find my personal legend.  I have learned a lot, but I still have to master the lessons I am learning.  For instance, regarding my weight loss, I know that it’s not about the food.  It’s about using food to numb myself and not feel what I’m feeling.  I have learnedthat I don’t like to “make waves” in certain situations because I never wanted to be a burden on my parents.  This book is solidifying some of these lessons.  Lessons about listening to my heart and following my dreams no matter how fearful I am about it.

I definitely recommend the book.  And I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes from the book.

Favorite quotes

Every second of the search is an encounter with God. - The Alchemist
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God.”

Throughout my whole “awakening” experience, I have felt so grateful to be on this journey, to meet the people I have met, and to be surrounded by such love and beauty. This quote perfectly describes how I’ve felt while discovering new things about myself and learning new things.

“And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.”

I have read several books on the laws of attraction.  I have experienced this several times, but haven’t felt as big of an impact as I would like.  This is a great reminder to keep working toward your goal and to look for the signs that you are headed in the right direction.  And that you have the universe on your side.

“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”

I have found this to be true in so many ways.  As a mom, when I take care of myself and try to make myself better, my family benefits.  They become happier, calmer and better.  It’s a ripple affect.

“No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn’t know it.”

I find this very comforting.  That no matter what I do, I am significant.  I make a difference, I matter.

“Don’t give in to your fears. If you do, you won’t be able to talk to your heart.”

This quote hits close to home.  When I started exploring my vision for my life, I found it hard to remember what I loved.  What do I enjoy doing?  What am I passionate about?  I couldn’t remember.  I love the phrasing of this because it articulates it in such a way that I am connecting my struggle, the journey from my head to my heart.

People are capable at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of. - The Alchemist

I’ll leave you with this one.  “People are capable at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”  I love this.  It doesn’t matter how old you are, or what stage of life you are in, you can dream and follow those dreams.

This book was very to the point and inspirational.  I reflected a lot about trusting my heart, (although I believe we’d call it intuition) and not questioning the logistics of how it will work.  “When you want something, all the universe conspires in  helping you achieve it.”

…listen to your heart.
