Mini Mudroom

When we first started talking about fixing our “mudroom” situation, I was beyond ready. Shoes were scattered, coats were piling up with the colder weather, and the drop zone for my son’s backpack, my work bag, and the lunchbox? Nonexistent.

This little entry space behind our door was always chaotic—and honestly? A tripping hazard. I’d tossed out locker ideas, scrolled Pinterest more times than I care to admit, and even considered turning our laundry room into a drop zone. But the most convenient space? Right behind the door.

Last week, I came back from a conference to find my husband had completely transformed that cluttered corner into the mudroom of my dreams. He took a day off work, picked up all the materials from Menards, scrolled through my Pinterest boards (gold star, right?), and built it all himself.

It fills all of our needs, and then some!  He did an awesome job, and gets a big gold star from me!  A place for all coats, shoes, backpacks, and even a little storage at the top for hats or lunchboxes.

(I’m linking some similar items at the end in case you’re dreaming up your own mini mudroom! 👇)

Here’s what he used:

  • Simple wooden boards (cut to size)

  • Wall hooks for coats and backpacks

  • Open shelving at the top for hats and lunchboxes

  • A bottom shelf for baskets and shoes

Now? Everything has a home. Coats, shoes, backpacks—even the random winter accessories that used to float around our house like lost socks. The best part? No more tripping over shoes the second we walk in the door. 🙌

Okay, well… almost. Still working on training the kids to use the system. 😅
